土耳其這起軍事政變，造成近200人死亡，但在不到24 小時內就劃下句點，儘管突顯出軍方的不滿，但政變的幕後主使者到底是誰，還不清楚。
土耳其總統「艾爾段」將矛頭指向流亡美國十多年的回教教長「顧蘭」，並要求美國逮捕或引渡「顧蘭」，「艾爾段」還說，過去多次暗殺及政變陰謀都是與「顧蘭」脫不了關係。但75歲的「顧蘭」斷然否認與政變有關。
「艾爾段」創立的「正義發展黨」自2002 年開始掌權至今，將當時瀕臨經濟崩潰的國家扭轉成今天的穩定局面，但「艾爾段」堅持的政教分離引起不少穆斯林的不滿，尤其在軍中高階將領中，有不少是虔誠的教徒。
這次政變從週五晚上開始，民眾震驚不已，最後政府當局以迅雷不急掩耳的速度弭平了政變，8名搭機前往希臘尋求庇護的政變軍人也被引渡回國。
「艾爾段」執政十多年，致力將土耳其打造成一個現代化的民主國家，但他堅持政教分離及鐵腕作風也引起不少抗議聲浪，此外，他支持敘利亞反抗軍，打擊「庫德族」民兵，使得土耳其成為回教聖戰士對付的目標，境內多次出現血腥暴力，掀起民眾的不滿情，政治觀察家指出，土耳其面臨的騷亂越來越多，想要推翻「艾爾段」的企圖不會就此結束。
